Opposition under attack in Uganda

Recent developments in Uganda are very concerning. 14 months before Presidential Elections, incumbent Yoweri Museveni is preparing for a violent period of campaigns and is eliminating opposition in a ruthless way, since Western Donors remain silent.

* On 16 November 2024 former opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who participated in 4 presidential elections, was abducted from Kenya and brought to a military court in Uganda. He is still on remand. The willingness of Ruto to cooperate with Museveni in extrajudiciary arrests is very worrying since Kenya was regarded as the single East African nation having democratic elections.

* On 22 November 2024 Olivia Lutaaya and 18 other pardoned NUP supporters were released after being in military detention for 4 years on trumped-up charges. Confessing to the crime of terrorism was their only way of getting out of prison. 9 NUP supporters who refused to plead guilty remain locked up, although no evidence whatsoever has been presented by the prosecutor. After being released, Lutaaya testified about the coercion, organised by Minister of Balaam Baraguhara, who is also known as the man leading ‘Muhoozi Project’ to install Museveni’s son as the next dictator.
